Port #1:

The Age of Exploration:Would you go?

The 15th and 16th century were a time of exploration and discovery for European nations. Taking advantage of new maritime knowledge and inventions, European powers undertook sea expeditions to expand their trade and influence.

  • What possible rewards might come from exploring the seas for new lands? The reward of exploring the seas for new lands might be first, they might find a new land they can colonize. They can also find trade posts, or new supplies in new lands.
  • What are the risks involved in embarking on a voyage into the unknown? They might risks lives from storms, or starvation. They might also waste supplies, and time, if they go out to explore but don't find anything.
  • What will you do if you actually run into other people? When I run into other people, I would say/do nothing, and just pass by.

Before You Leave

Your final task before leaving for the long voyage is FOR BOTH to look up ONE piece of new navigation technology you will be using so that you can teach your partner about how you will be using it. THIS INFORMATION COULD SAVE YOUR LIVES! Simply, search for ONE of the following tools and write a few sentences describing WHAT the instrument is and HOW it is used. (You can also look at p. 97 in your text to get you started.)

Compass- A compass is a navigational instrument that shows directions in a frame of reference that is stationary relative to the surface of the earth. The frame of reference defines the four cardinal directions (or points), north, south, east, and west. A compass rose (in a compass) shows the directions.

Create a chart with the following important information needed so we can keep track of everyone in the race

  • Explorer's full name and country sponsoring the exploration
  • Dates of voyage(s)
  • Size of fleet
  • And most importantly a summary of their (AND YOUR) discoveries/achievements and/or results of each journey. (I should see both positive AND negative results of their voyages!)

DaGama:
DaGama was one of the most successful in the Age of Discovery and the commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. Some of his achievements were his ships engaged in privateer actions against Arab merchant ships. He returned to Portugal in September 1503 with silk and gold. But he had some negative actions as well. He started capturing any Arab vessel he came across in Indian waters, and destroyed several houses in the city, on the sea shore. He also captured several rice vessels and cut off the crew's hands, ears and noses.

Smith:
Smith was an English soldier, explorer, and an author. His books and maps were important as his deeds, as they encouraged more Englishmen and women to follow the trail he had blazed and to colonise the New World, New England. Hew was the trouble maker of this voyage, so Captain Christopher Newport planned to execute him upon arrival in Virginia.

Cartier:
Cartier captured a region which is called Honguedo, in the favor of returning them with European goods. But in February, the people caught diseases, and as many as 25 of them died before the survivors learned from the Indians that the bark of a white spruce tree boiled in water would afford a cure. As they settled in Charlesbourg-Royal, and the men also began collecting what they believed to be diamonds and gold there, but which upon return to France were discovered to be merely quartz crystals and iron pyrites.
